The columella is the bridge of tissue that separates the nostrils at the nasal base. A nose is said to have increased “columellar show” when more than a normal amount of nostril is visible.
This excess of columella can be an isolated defect or part of a series of modifications sought in a rhinoplasty plan.
A number of surgical techniques can reduce the visibility of the columella from both the frontal and lateral view.
